The poster covers the uses of ser and estar, which both mean "to be" in Spanish. This topic is tricky for English speakers because we only have one verb for "to be." Spanish teachers love to say that "whole books have been written on the subject of ser and estar," but this poster condenses it down to one page.
The mnemonic devices "doctor" for ser and "place" for estar make it easier for students to remember the situations where you would use each verb. Ser's acronym, DOCTOR, stands for Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, and Origin. Estar's acronym, PLACE, stands for Position, Location, Action, Condition, and Emotion.
